Foamix is Granted a Fourth U.S. Patent for OilGel™, Directed to Pharmaceutical Compositions and their Dermatological, Gynecological and Ophthalmic Applications

Rehovot (Israel), April 26, 2010

Foamix Ltd., a leading developer of topical products, which can be used for dermatological, gynecological and ophthalmic applications, today announced that the United States Patent Office has granted the company a fourth patent, protecting its Oil-Gel™ drugs.

United States Patent No. 7,682,623, entitled “Pharmaceutical composition for topical application”, covers unique oil-based gel compositions that can be used to treat a wide range of diseases and disorders.

"This patent grant lends additional strength to Foamix’s patent portfolio and enhances the position of our multiple technologies and delivery systems," stated Dr. Dov Tamarkin, CEO of Foamix. "Moreover, the patent will help Foamix to build new strategic partnerships and provide licensing opportunities to develop unique dermatological and ophthalmologic drugs," he added.

Foamix’s OilGel™ technology is intended as a convenient and easy delivery system of medicated actives for application to the skin and to mucosal membranes including the ocular mucosa and the vagina.

OilGel™ -based products exhibit a semi-solid state but transform to a readily spreadable liquid state upon applying onto the skin, which can be rapidly absorbed. Likewise this property allows for easy ocular application of compositions as a semi-solid ophthalmic drug preparation, which has marked advantages over conventional eye drops and ointments.

Being water-free, and having a semi-solid gel rheology, the OilGel™ products can accommodate one or more water-sensitive, for example, pH sensitive drugs. The granted claims are directed inter alia , to pharmaceutical compositions comprising a carrier and therapeutically effective amounts of drugs. Various drugs are claimed including antibiotics, antifungals, antiviral agents, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, immunosupressants, anti-inflammatory agents, vitamin derivatives and corticosteroids.
