OILGEL™
OILGEL™ exhibits semi-solid state upon standing and liquid state upon rubbing onto the skin. This property allows for application of a cosmetic or pharmaceutical preparation as a semi-solid, yet by rubbing the composition onto the skin, it freely spreads on the surface and is rapidly absorbed.
Which oils:
Any oil can be gelled using OILGEL™ technology, including:
- Any vegetable oil
- Mineral oil
- Silicone oil
- Aromatic oils
Optional Indications and Active Drugs:
The active drugs may be a single drug or a combination of drugs that can be dissolved in hydrophobic solvents. Examples of such drugs are antibiotic, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anesthetic, analgesic, anti-allergic, corticosteroid, retinoid and anti-proliferative medications and mixtures thereof at any proportion.
Antibacterial agents: One important class of drugs is comprised of antibacterial agents. It is well known that bacterial infections are involved in a variety of superficial disorders of the skin, eye, mucosal membrane, oral cavity, vagina and rectum.
The antibacterial drugs can be selected from the group of chloramphenicol, tetracyclines, synthetic and semi-synthesic penicillins, beta-lactames, quinolones, fluoroquinolnes, macrolide antibiotics, peptide antibiotics, cyclosporines and any combination thereof at a therapeutically effective concentration. Another group of antibacterial agents, which is non-specific, comprises free radical liberating compounds, such as benzoyl peroxide.
Eye infections and inflammations are a preferred target for OILGEL™. Conjuctivitis, involving bacteria such as staphylococcus aureus, streptococcus pneumoniae, and haemophilus influenzae is generally treated with antibiotic ointments, e.g., bacitracin 500 U/g or gentamicin 0.3% ophthalmic ointment instilled into the affected eye. Yet, ointment applied into the eye created a sticky feeling and causes major disturbances to the patient. The current composition, which turns from semi-solid consistency into liquid instantly after application, does not have that disadvantage and thus, treatment compliance is improved.
Fungal infections: Fungal infections are another object of treatment using OILGEL™. Superficial fungal infection of the skin is one of the commonest skin diseases seen in general practice.
Viral Infections: OILGEL™ is particularly beneficial in the case of viral infections. Our composition, being hydrophobic would facilitate an enhanced rate of penetration and better topical distribution of any of the above listed antiviral drugs.
Topical Corticosteroids and Antiallergic Agents: Antiinflammaoty or antiallergic agent can be selected from the group of corticosteroids, non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs, anti-histamines and immunosuppressants. Since all corticosteroid drugs are hydrophobic, OILGEL™, being hydrophobic, is most suitable as a vehicle to facilitate facile spreading and enhanced rate of penetration.
Psoriasis is a very common chronic skin disease, which may be the target of treatment using OILGEL™. It is marked by periodic flare-ups of sharply defined red patches covered by a silvery, flaky surface.
Corticosteroid ointments, greasy preparations containing little water, are commonly used for treating psoriasis. Their main disadvantage is in their sticky feeling, which remains so long the after treatment is over.
Other inflammatory disorders, which can be treated by OILGEL™, include seborrheic dermatitis of the face and trunk, seborrheic blepharitis, contact dermatitis, stasis dermatitis (gravitational eczema; varicose eczema), exfoliative dermatitis (erythroderma), lichen simplex chronicus, pemphigus, conjuctivitis and uveitis.
Topical antihistamines can also be incorporated in OILGEL™.
